Tennessee State Senate-110th General Assembly
Laws Effective July 1, 2018
July 1st marks the beginning of a new 2018-19 fiscal year in Tennessee as the state’s budget passed by the General Assembly in April becomes effective. Many other new laws are also set for enactment, including major legislation addressing Tennessee’s opioid epidemic. I have featured the legislation in a three part series recently in my newsletter.

New Tennessee Driver’s License
I was joined by members of the Knox County Delegation, Commissioner David Purky of the Department of Safety and Homeland Security and representatives of the hospitality industry to roll out Tennessee’s new vertical driver’s licenses for individuals under 21. Representative Bill Dunn and I sponsored the legislation. As of July 1st, everyone under 21 in Tennessee that gets a new driver’s license, will receive a vertical license.
The concept behind the vertical design is to more easily and effectively identify those under 21 in order to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors. This will ultimately save lives.
